Exemptions for Year 11 and 12 students:

For international students from China  in Year 11 and 12, on the 22nd of February the Australian Government announced limited case by case exemptions who hold a valid student visa (and their accompanying guardians) permitting them to enter Australia to commence the school year – Where they need public health requirements.

  • The importance is in recognition of the final two years of school. 
  • On a case by case basis the exemptions will be considered. The Department of Skills, Employment and Education, will manage this process.

Effect of travel restrictions on Student visa holders:

  1. The day after the travel restrictions commenced visitor visa of those were were cancelled on arrival.for a small group of students to regularize the status. The Department has made legislative instruments.
  2. During the Corona virus measures, is advised to email cancellations@homeaffairs.gov.au. whose temporary visa has been cancelled. The department will consider revocation of cancellation
  3. All affected students have been and will continue to be notified. On arrival in Australia many students had their visa cancelled 
  4. Visitors are being drafted to regularize an even smaller group of students who returned offshore.
  5. If there is an issue with status of the visa or the grant visa holder need to check their visa condition in VEVO. 

What the Department has done:

  • Visa processing continues. Student visa applications which meet all the visa requirements, The Department is approving their visa so that they can travel as soon as travel restrictions are lifted. 
  • Students are able to travel to Australia. If a student has remained outside of mainland China for more than 14 days after 1 February 2020, 
  • As key services in China, many student visa applicants cannot meet health, character and English language criteria are still closed due to closures 

Travel restriction exemptions for Years 11 and 12 for Chinese students

  • As part of the Australian Government’s response to the COVID-19 epidemic. Since 1 February there is restriction to enter in Australia.
  • Allow to enter in Australia in compassionate & compelling situation, The commissioner of Australian border force has the discretion.
  • Allowing Years 11 and 12 students to continue their studies or commence relies on the ABF Commissioner exercising this discretion on a case by case basis
  • Criteria have to be met.

Who is eligible to apply?

  • Holding a current international student visa granted on or before 22 February 2020 
  • Chinese international students enrolled in Year 11 and 12 
  • Not currently unwell
