I recently graduated; may I apply for PR right away?
Typically, candidates won't have enough time or won't be eligible to apply for PR right once after graduating. Being on a graduate visa is very helpful for getting permanent residency. The fundamental benefit of a graduate visa is that it enables its bearer to live and work in Australia while practicing their profession. You have a huge edge in getting asked for Australian Permanent Residency if you live and work there. The Grad Visa also gives you the opportunity to accumulate the job experience necessary to pass a competency assessment. This is crucial since you must pass a talent evaluation in your line of employment in order to obtain any PR work visa.
Which permanent work visa options are there in Australia?
In Australia, there are two primary categories of permanent work visas:
- Employer-Sponsored (Subclass 186, 494(TR), 482(TR)), or
- Skilled Migration in General (Subclass 189, 190 or 491).
The General Skilled Migration Pathway is primarily covered in this video (Subclass 189, 190 or 491). for visas for general skilled migration. Instead than being sponsored by a business, applicants are instead nominated by Immigration or a State or Territory. Since they are not affiliated with a business, they have far more freedom and are therefore much more desirable than those who are sponsored by an enterprise.
In recent years, State Nominated (Subclass 190) or Regional Nominated visas have been the most popular visas for our graduates (Subclass 491). The application process for both of these visas is virtually the same.
Why is it vital to transition to a graduate visa?
With the Graduate Visa, candidates can accumulate the necessary time to satisfy state nomination requirements and industry work experience necessary to pass a skill assessment.
In order to apply for these visas in Australia, candidates often need:
- to conduct a thorough skill evaluation (in many occupations 1 year of post qualification is required) and
- for a predetermined amount of time, to reside in that state and carry out their line of business there (usually 3 – 12 months)
Let's use an example.
Emmanuel graduated as a wall and floor tiler. During his stay on the graduate visa, he applied for a Permanent State Nominated (Subclass 190 visa). Emmanuel utilized the time on the graduate visa to:
- Satisfy the skill assessment criteria -At least one year of work experience is required to pass the JRP and receive a TRA skill assessment.
- Meet the migration requirements for South Australia – To be eligible for South Australia, he had to have lived and worked there for at least a year in his line of work.
Greta, a recently graduated civil engineer, used her time on the Graduate Visa to complete the QLD Requirements in order to submit an application for a 190-PR.
- Satisfy the requirement for a skill assessment. She actually didn't require any work experience to pass a competency evaluation because she studied in Australia.
- She was required to reside and work in South QLD in her line of work for at least six months in order to satisfy the QLD state migration requirements.
They can only file an Expression of Interest and receive an invitation for these visas if they have both 1. undergone a thorough skill evaluation and 2. satisfied the state migration requirements. This would not be feasible without a legitimate work visa following their schooling.
