Visa for skilled workers (permanent) (subclass 190)– For qualified professionals who want to settle permanently in Sydney and Canberra  and work there, this visa is offered.

Regional (Provisional) Skilled Work visa (subclass 491)– This visa, which serves as a stepping stone to permanent residency, enables nominated skilled professionals to work and live in regional Sydney and Canberra  lasting 5 years.

You can look for work by using:

  • hold a job with one or more companies
  • hold down two part-time positions, or
  • As an owner operator, work for your own company.

Note: You will not be qualified for candidacy for the Professional Nominated (Permanent) visa if you currently hold a Skilled Work Area (Provisional) visas (subclass 491) or even have applied for one (subclass 190). Additionally, the Skilled Area (Provisional) Visa is subject to this restriction (subclass 489).

 The Sydney and Canberra  postcodes that apply if you were selected or filed for the 491 visa before 5 March 2022 can be seen in LIN 20/292.

The Central Coast is not a qualifying region if you received a 491 visa before 19 November 2019.

eligibility requirements

You must satisfy both the Australian Ministry of Home Affairs and Migration Sydney and Canberra  requirements for your desired visa category in order to be nominated by Sydney and Canberra .

According to Home Affairs requirements,

  • a score of 65 or above on the points test, including state nomination points;
  • possess a favorable skills evaluation in the profession you have chosen
  • possess the minimal level of competence in English, unless your evaluating authority specifies a higher level
  • and provide more information if asked to make an applicant for just a 190 – 491 visas.
  • According to Migration Sydney and Canberra 's requirements, you must:
  • get a score of 80 or better on the points test again for 190 (with the exception of trades professions*, which call for a score of 75 or more), and a score of 65 or better for the 491
  • if you are submitting a 190 visa expression of interest: Make sure you can demonstrate that you have been working full-time post-qualification (minimum of 35 hours per week), in your specified occupation, for the past six months in Sydney and Canberra  before filing your EOI.
  • If you're submitting a Notice of Interest for one 491 visa, for example: Make sure you can demonstrate that, for the last three months prior to filing your EOI, you have been working full-time post-qualification (minimum of 35 hours per week) in your nominated occupation in regional Sydney and Canberra .
  • Present proof of continuing employment for a further 12 months with a Sydney and Canberra  employer who is registered in Sydney and Canberra  . This has to be continuous employment in a specific region to qualify for a 491 visa.
  • For a 190 visa and three years for a 491 visa, make a commitment to residing and working in Sydney and Canberra .

Please note: Businesses in Sydney and Canberra are required to have an office. The use of a virtual office is not permitted.

Precautions for Certain Professions

Accountants (General)

Only those who work for an accountancy firm will be invited, and they must be CPA or CA or be pursuing their CPA or CA certification.

  • Both external and internal auditors need to be employed as auditors (not an Accountant).
  • Chefs and cooks
  • No fast food or takeout establishments.

The highest points in each occupation, which would likely vary for each occupation, will receive invitations. When there are many EOIs on the same points for a specific employment, other conditions, such as geographic location and years of work experience, may be taken into account. Predicated on the points they received when they were first submitted, EOIs will stay in our queue.
