The Subclass 191, known as Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) allows people who have lived and worked in regional areas (for a minimum of 3 years in Australia) to live and work in Australia permanently. With this visa, you can work and study anywhere in Australia, and sponsor eligible family members of permanent residents. If eligible, you’ll eventually become and Australian citizen.
Here is everything you need to know!
Eligibility:
- You must hold an eligible visa (Subclass 491 or Subclass 494) when you apply and must have held that visa for at least 3 years before you apply.
- You must satisfy the income requirement – and provide notices of assessment issued by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) for three income years out of the five years of your eligible visa (Subclass 491 or Subclass 494).
- You must have complied with the conditions of your eligible visa when in Australia. This requirement applies for the whole period you hold the visa.
- You must meet the health requirement. This also applies to any family members who apply for the visa with you.
- You must meet the character requirement. This also applies to family members aged 16 years and over who apply for the visa with you.
- Your immigration history will be checked prior to approval, meaning your chances of obtaining the Subclass 191 may decrease if you have any visa cancellations.
How to Apply:
- Gather & prepare your document – you are required to provide identity, character and other documents that prove you have complied with your visa conditions.
- Apply for the visa – once you have successfully gathered all documents, you can apply for the visa online.
- After your application is submitted – Someone will be in contact with you. If successful, you will receive a notification of your grant visa.
- Visa Outcome – If your visa has been granted you will receive all your certifications & steps to take afterwards, however, if refused, someone will be in contact with you regarding why your visa was refused and if you have the right to review your decision. PLEASE NOTE – you will not be refunded if your application has been refused.

- Can stay in Australia permanently.
- Work and study in Australia
- Enrol in Australia’s public healthcare system – Medicare.
- Sponsor your relatives to come to Australia.
- Travel to and from Australia for 5 years
- Become an Australian citizen.
