By giving new benefits to potential visa applicants, the Department (DHA) is once again adopting a logical approach to the Australian visa program. In this situation, the Department has formally ratified Alex Hawke, the previous minister for aviation, citizenship, migrant services, and multicultural affairs, who pledged in a joint media release to simplify the application requirements for those applying for Temporary Graduate Visas.
It is designed to give visa holders the chance to gain professional experience in Australia, advance their careers by using their talents in a professional setting, and eventually apply for skilled or independent contractor visas.
Three different student cohorts are served by each of the three streams that make up the Temporary Graduate visa: Graduate Work, Post-Study Work, and Replacement. Only the Graduate Work stream, which predominantly serves foreign graduates with Australian degrees and trade qualifications, is subject to the additional incentives announced on June 23, 2022.
For those applying for visas under the Graduate Work stream, it is necessary that they:
Possess an Australian educational qualification (degree, diploma, or trade qualification) that is closely related to the applicant's nominated occupation and obtain positive preliminary skills assessment for the nominated occupation.
Notably, this provision does not eliminate the Australian Process Known (formerly known as the "2-year study requirement"). For a graduate visa, overseas students must still meet this condition.
There are two linked components to the Australian study required (ASR):
- The candidate for the visa has finished at least relevant university hours of research in Australia.
- The visa seeker must have spent at least 16 calendar days physically residing in Australia while enrolled in school.
The Australian study criteria can only be satisfied by study that leads to the attainment of a degree, diploma, or trade certificate (an eligible qualification). Legislation defines the terms "degree," "diploma”, and "trade qualification." A degree might be a bachelors, masters, or doctoral degree, for example.
