On 2 October 2020 The federal government has announceda Safe Travel Zone (travel bubble) with New Zealand. The Australian Government is establishing with New Zealand a Safe Travel Zone. Since the COVID-19 pandemic began Australia and New Zealand have worked closely together.

The Deputy Prime Minister The Hon Michael McCormack MP has said In the announcement that The Australian Government’s Department of Health in New Zealand, has undertaken a public health risk assessment of COVID-19, which indicated that New Zealand posed a low risk of COVID-19 transmission to Australia. We are committed to opening up both domestic travel with New Zealand and within Australia,as soon as the health advice says it is safe to do so as well as other low risk countries. From Friday, 16 October Passengers from New Zealand will be able to travel to Australia, quarantine-free, provided in New Zealand they have not been in an area designated as a COVID-19 hotspot in the preceding 14 days.
Currently, in New Zealand there are no COVID-19 hotspots . However, this is being closely monitored. By using a three-day rolling average of three locally acquired cases per day the government determines the hotspot.
Australians Travelling to New zealand :
All travellers to New Zealand have a 14-day quarantine or isolation and to be tested for COVID-19. This includes Australian permanent residents or Australian citizens. However, Australian permanent residents or Australian citizens resident in New Zealand ordinarily are not required to request for travel before traveling. Nonetheless, you may be asked to provide documentation that you live in New Zealand at the airport to show.
Documentations may include:
- Employment documents
- New Zealand driver licence
- Evidence of tax residency with Inland Revenue
- Rate Notices
- Utility bills
New zealander Travelling to Australia:
The passenger must be on a quarantine-free flight from New Zealand to travel to Australia.For example, we encourage that you check this before traveling and Air New Zealand has announced ‘quarantine’ and ‘quarantine-free’ flights. We expect the establishment from New Zealand to Australia of quarantine-free travel will also free up space for around an additional 325 passengers a week to enter quarantine in Sydney.
Non-New Zealand citizens may also travel to Australia provided that they have a valid visa and meet the requirements.
The first stage of the quarantine-free travel announced by the government will be with the Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, Victoria, the Northern Territory.In the future this may expand.
To ensure that information is collected on arrivals to assist with contact tracing if necessary There will be increased border security at the airport.
Earlier on 16 October 2020 Three flights from New Zealand arrived at Sydney Airport carrying international passengers who will not need to quarantine upon arrival for the first time in seven months.
